Santa Clara Pueblo Blackware Plate by Belen Tapia
Vintage item from the second half of the 20th century from pueblo potter Belen Tapia from Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico. Santa Clara pueblo is well regarded for its blackware pottery and craftsmanship. Their items are highly collectible. This piece features a deer motif and is in very good condition. Signed on the back - Belen Tapia Santa Clara Pueblo. Back of the plate has slight residue from a price sticker.
Belen Tapia (1916-1999) was a niece of Sara Fina Tafoya and a sister of Ramoncita Sisneros and the mother of Anita Suazo, Frank Tapia, and Anna Archuleta. She began making pottery in the 1930's during the early years of Santa Clara polychrome pottery. However, by the 1950's she was making primarily carved pottery with unique designs and forms. By the 1980's she was again making polychrome pottery, bringing her artistry full circle.
