Reefka Schneider is an award-winning
contemporary realist artist. Social justice and human dignity are the core
themes of
her art work. She lives in McAllen
,Texas
across the
Rio Grande
from Reynosa
,Mexico.
Yvonamor Palix, international art
curator, favorably compares Reefka’s figurative drawings “to the work
of Francisco
Zuniga, which although similar in subject matter, his works
do not portray these characters in such a human and real manner.”
Reefka’s art work was chosen to be one of eight artists featured in
Writing Towards Hope: The Literature of Human
Rights in
Latin America
edited by Marjorie Agosín and published by Yale University Press in
the fall of 2006.
Reefka has had exhibitions at The University of Texas-Pan American,
The Rockport Center for the Arts, The International
Museum of Art and
Science in
McAllen
,
Texas
and the
Art
Center
for the Islands in Port Aransas,
Texas.
She is represented by Nuevo Santander Galley in
McAllen, Texas.
Reefka perfected her art by spending years drawing from the live
model and from the life around her. Her studies
with Emilio Abugarde of
Saltillo
,
Mexico
and Cathy Goodale of
Loveland
,Colorado
were especially important
to her. When Reefka was seriously injured in a
car accident, she turned to working from photographs she took of the
people on the streets of
Mexico
and in her community. She and her poet husband, Steven, then began to
collaborate
on the poetry art exhibit “Borderlines: Drawing Border
Lives,” a traveling exhibit of drawings and poems that portrays
life
along the
U.S.
–
Mexico
border.
