CARLOS EVERHARD
Born in Mexico, Carlos Everhard began drawing at a very
young age. His parents began to support his artistic development in
high school were he received his first full scholarship at the Marie Walsh
Sharp Foundation in Colorado Springs in 1997. From there, his
artistic development began to dramatically grow as he applied to college
programs at universities such as the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, the
Massachusetts College of Art, and the Art Institute of Boston where he
received his Bachelors of Fine Art. During his studies in the New
England area, Carlos received the Tisdale Scholarship and the Fine Arts
Portfolio Award from the Art Institute of Boston. He also studied
abroad in the Lorenzo de Medici Institute in Florence Italy for two
semesters. He was accepted to participate in two residency workshops
in La Cipressaia in Montagnana Italy. In 2006, he received his
Masters of Fine Art from the Art Institute of San Francisco. His
work was selected for the front cover of the Vernisage Graduate M.F.A.
Exhibition at the Fort Mason Center.
Most of Carlos' painting influences range from the
Neo-Classical French paintings of the 18th century, to works by
contemporary artists such as Mark Tansey, Lucien Freud, and Sidney
Goodman. Through visual metaphors, he represents the nature of human
longing; the conception of longing for what we have had and
experienced. His paintings are about the ongoing emptiness that
propels us through time. He uses the human figure as well as animals
to serve as a vehicle of expression, and due to the viewer's natural
empathetic response to another's body, renders the expression more vital
and clear.
The process Carlos uses involves working from life,
memory, and photographs to create a drawn composition that is then
transferred to panel or canvas. In his oil paintings, he works his
images with a full range of technical mediums such as opacity,
transparency, and opalescent scumbles to create his convincing
effects. In his charcoal drawings, he slowly builds up the surface
to create a soft glowing halo effect by using a variety of cloths and soft
leathers.
